Scintilla Bass

Scintilla: Handmade Bass Guitar

Mixed Media/Functional Sculpture

2025

  • This bass guitar, titled Scintilla, from the Latin word Scintillare, meaning to sparkle or twinkle, underwent many alterations to become the instrument you see today. This bass guitar was initially inspired by Bootsy Collins’ famous Space Bass, but was later redesigned to have a more abstract body accompanied by a horned headstock.

The bass started as a to-scale blueprint of the design and hardware in Adobe Illustrator, which was used as a layout to cut the body from a block of wood. The body was carefully sculpted over the course of months wth the help of a band saw, spindle and belt sanders, and a router machine for clean, sharp chamfered edges.

The bass was finished with different kinds of paint (sprays and enamels) to give it a sparkly and glossy finish. The neck was stained with wood finish, speckled with glitter, and sealed with polyurethane, and the frets were sanded to ensure a clean sound. Afterwards, the hardware was soldered and installed, creating a bass that is truly one of a kind.
